Delaware’s Department of Correction (DOC) reports three inmates have turned up COVID-19 positive - the first new cases in the state’s prison system since May 21.
The DOC says all three are connected to the Sussex Correctional Institution (SCI) in Georgetown.
One involves an asymptomatic inmate who contracted COVID-19 through close contact with a COVID-19 patient in the community.
Another inmate from the Morris Community Corrections Center (MCCC) in Dover tested positive after being transferred from Sussex Correctional last week.
The third Sussex Correctional inmate tested positive at an area hospital while being treated for a medical condition this week.
The inmate at the hospital remains there while the other two are now at DOC’s COVID-19 Treatment Center at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center (JTVCC) in Smyrna.
The DOC has suspended in-person visitation at Sussex Correctional Institution. It is also giving inmates there masks and quarantining inmates in the two housing units connected to the new cases.
The DOC also reports seven staff members and one healthcare contractor at its facilities statewide - currently have COVID-19.
