Sussex Tech High School is getting a new principal.

Matthew Donovan joins Sussex Tech July 1, 2021.

Donovan comes from Middletown High School where he is currently principal.

“I am from Sussex County and I migrated up the state over the course of my 25 year career,"said Donovan, "And it's time I went ahead back to my roots, back to my family in Sussex County. My daughter is graduating this year from Middletown High School and it just seemed like an optimal time to begin looking for that.”

Donovan was previously assistant principal at Caesar Rodney High School for nine years and worked in the Indian River School District for seven years, teaching biology and coaching at Sussex Central High School.

Donovan says Sussex Tech plays an important role in Sussex County preparing students for career, college or military service futures.

He notes that his priorities are helping students reach their goals and making sure teachers and staff have the tools they need to assist the students.

“I’ve identified in public education - especially where I am - the move to preparing students for what tomorrow looks like, to lead a life of significance. I’ve changed our motto here to be just that," said Donovan. "Because we need to pay very close attention to what’s going to be in existence in a few years - five years, 10 years - for kids to get into a trade, a study, a direction in general.”

Donovan replaces current Sussex Tech principal John Demby, who will become the District’s new supervisor of support services.

Demby has served as Sussex Tech’s principal since 2010.
