Parking will be free this summer at Rehoboth Park and Ride

A big change is coming to DART’s Rehoboth Park and Ride this summer.

Starting May 18, 2020 - as the busy beach season gets underway - people parking at the Rehoboth Park and Ride off Route 1 on Shuttle Road will no longer need to pay.

“Since we opened Lewes Park and Ride, it’s been free. And now the Rehoboth Park and Ride will also be free,” said DART spokesperson Julie Theyerl.

She notes the move extends a policy already in place outside the summer season.

“We started year round bus service back in September of 2018. And at that time, we opened the gates and allowed free parking during the off season. So when we started up the beach bus service again that following May (2019), we did receive a lot of feedback that people would rather pay the fare then have to pay to park,” Theyerl said.

Theyerl says the cost to park at the Rehoboth Park and Ride was $10, but included four, free unlimited ride daily bus passes.

Theyerl says DART is making the change after hearing from customers that they’d prefer to pay for the passes in exchange for free parking year round.

She adds that DART is also extending Beach Bus service this year.

“So the Beach Bus Service is much more frequent, a much bigger span of service hours - going up until 2 a.m.," said Theyerl. "So we’re extending that to September 20th this year; so it’s an additional week of service, which I know a lot of the businesses were happy to have that frequent service for their employees - as well as their customers.”

Theyerl says riders can find transit schedules and real-time bus route information on the DART Transit App - and can purchase fares on the DART Payment App.

The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce supports the change and will be selling DART passes this season.
