9/11 Memorial Blood Drive returns to the Monster Mile

The Blood Bank of Delmarva heads to The Monster Mile in Dover this week for it’s annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive.";

Dover International Speedway pays tribute to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks with its annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive this week.

The blood drive takes place over two days this year, Thursday, September 10, 2020 and Friday, September 11, 2020.

And Dover International Speedway spokesman Michael Lewis says it will operate a little differently.

“It’s actually going to be within the Oval - the actual donations will take place in the NASCAR Cup Series garage. Before they had taken place in an upper floor of the casino area," said Lewis. "But this year, people will be able to actually drive through the NASCAR Cup Series garage and make their donations there. And after they’re complete, they’ll have the option to do a lap around the speedway.

This is the 15th year the Monster Mile and Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) are teaming up for this event.

Blood Bank of Delmarva spokesman Tony Prado says they hope to register 240 people to donate, potentially helping up to 720 hospital patients,

“That’s a big chunk of what we do daily. When you think about the fact that we need 350 people a day to donate blood in order to supply all 19 hospitals on the Delmarva Peninsula. So if you do the math real quick - 120 each day is a significant chunk of the 350 number,” said Prado.

People can sign up to donate here.

Organizers add that everyone who participates will get their temperature checked prior to entry and masks are required.
