Rental cars now available at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry

Delaware Public Media

Rental cars are now available  at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry - on either side of the Delaware Bay.

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry is partnering with the Avis Budget Group to operate car rental locations at both the Cape May and Lewes Ferry Terminals.

“With COVID cases on the rise in the area and folks are more hesitant to travel - be it airplanes or buses - this may be a good opportunity for those individuals who are looking for a getaway to use the service that Avis Budget has here at the Ferry terminal(s) and vacation locally,” said Delaware River and Bay Authority spokesman Jim Salmon.

He says it’s their first try offering rental cars to those that ride the Ferry. And COVID isn’t the only reason for the change.  Salmon notes that it’s very expensive to take your own vehicle on the Ferry and rentals offer a cost-effective alternative.

Salmon adds that rentals also give foot passengers another option to explore resort communities on both sides of the Delaware Bay.

“We’re looking with our foot passenger programs and the local communities on both sides - we believe this is a good opportunity to have a rental car operation at our Terminal facilities," said Salmon. "We believe that this is a good idea to give our customers another option to explore the communities on both sides of the Bay.”

Salmon also points out many people may prefer a rental to using the Ferry’s shuttle buses because of rising COVID cases.

The car rental service counters are located inside each Ferry terminal.

Reservations can be made by calling the toll-free number 1-800-352-7900, through its websites avis.com and budget.com or by calling the terminal phone numbers directly.  The local Avis phone numbers are (609) 305-6867 (Cape May) and (302) 313-9464 (Lewes) while the local Budget phone numbers (609) 305-6913 (Cape May) and (302) 313-9724 (Lewes).
