Former Delaware GOP Party Chairman weighs in on 2020 race

Delaware Public Media

Former Delaware Republican Party Chairman Charlie Copeland is giving his take on the 2020 Presidential election.

Copeland, who rose to state Senate minority leader during his time in the legislature, said Joe Biden will be someone to watch as the Democratic primaries inch closer.

He said Biden has real strengths as a candidate because he’s well liked by those who’ve worked with him and knows how to get things done.

But Copeland said he doesn’t think Democrats outside Delaware will decide to give him the Democratic nomination. He thinks it will go to U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris.

“And I think so because you know she’s got minority bonafides, she’s a woman and she’s had a legitimate elected position in the state of California being Attorney General,” he said.

Copeland said it’s very likely President Donald Trump will be re-elected. He says a lot of Republicans like his policies. “They like where the nation is going economically and globally against our - the competitive nations like China and Iran and Russia,” he said.

Copeland adds he doesn’t see the primary campaign launched by former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld as a threat to the president. But he says people would start paying attention if Maryland GOP Gov. Larry Hogan also jumped in to primary Trump.
