Delawareans react to former VP Biden's campaign for president

The Biden Institute

It’s official: Former Vice President Joe Biden is running for president.

Some Delaware Democrats have been encouraging Biden to run for months. Others are urging the party to support more progressive candidates, including women and people of color.

In the online video announcing his run, Biden framed his campaign as a battle for the soul of the nation. He attacks President Donald Trump’s response to the 2017 neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Despite his long history in the First State, some younger Delawareans seem less familiar with Biden’s policy positions than those of other candidates. University of Delaware student Rachel Modzelewski said she’ll research his positions, but Sen. Bernie Sanders appeals to her politically.

“The whole socialism aspect," she said when asked about what she likes about Sanders. "And free healthcare. And the pardoning of student loans.”

Others expressed enthusiasm for Biden, but also for Sanders and Sen. Cory Booker.

Many Delawareans say they’re excited Biden is jumping into race. Wilmington resident Tariq Hook said he was disappointed when Biden decided not to run in 2016.

“Biden has the gravitas to go in there, take the primary and actually give Trump a run for his money," he said. "So I’m a huge fan. Biden 2020.”

Delaware’s Congressional delegation immediately endorsed Biden’s bid for the Oval Office. Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester said she’s endorsing Biden because he’s a unifier. Sen. Chris Coons said Biden will restore the United States’ role in the world as a force for stability, freedom and human rights. Sen. Tom Carper said Biden is a tested, experienced leader with a proven track record of getting things done for our country.

On Twitter, Trump also welcomed Biden to the race, referring to him as “Sleepy Joe.”

Biden is holding a community event in Pittsburgh on Monday. He’s set to formally launch his campaign in Philadelphia on May 18th.
