Dewey Beach Mayor T.J. Redefer dies

The mayor of Dewey Beach has died after a months-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

T.J. Redefer died Tuesday afternoon at Beebe Hospital in Lewes; he was 58-years-old.

Redefer was mayor of Dewey Beach since 2017, when he was first elected a town commissioner and unanimously appointed mayor by his fellow commissioners.

Redefer also worked in real estate since 1987 and was well-known for his drone photography in the resort.

Local politicians turned to Facebook Tuesday night to offer condolences to Redefer’s wife, daughter and son.

State Senator Ernie Lopez said, “Delawareans have lost a true public servant with the passing of T.J. Redefer.”  House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf called Redefer a “good man” and a “successful businessman.” Dewey Commissioner Dale Cooke called Redefer "a true gentleman" and all-around "nice guy."

There is no word yet on funeral arrangements for Mayor Redefer.
