Gov. Jack Markell is touting the newly expanded Delaware Bayshore Byway in his weekly message.

The governor spoke at the opening of a new part of the scenic byway, which follows Route 9 along Delaware's bay coast.

Markell says it's an economic development tool for bayside towns and a way to spotlight the First State's natural beauty:

"We can be proud of four new milestones we recently reached, all of which encourage Delawareans and visitors to enjoy the Bayshore by connecting with nature, exploring our history, and discovering waterfront towns," he said.

Those milestones include preservation of the Thousand Acre Marsh,  where the governor spoke, and new visitor accessibility tools for bayfront nature attractions.

"Preserving and using these natural resources provides tremendous opportunities to enhance the quality of life in our state and strengthen our economy," he said.

The state has also upped its branding of the byway as a scenic route for tourists. Markell says he hopes it'll make the area a destination.
