DSU opens virtual exhibition of the work of alumnus Guy Miller

Delaware State University is offering a virtual exhibition of the works of alumnus Guy Miller.

The exhibition is called Subversion:  Not A Bird, Not A Plane.

It explores the issue of African American representation in pop culture.

“You will see many familiar things; things that you have in your household - things you have purchased and things you have purchased for your children. It’s filled with a lot of pop culture items I would call them," said Miller. "So there are Pez dispensers , there’s lunch boxes, there’s trading cards and there’s movie posters - just novelty items", said Guy Miller.

Miller says his work features his renditions of African American superheroes of the mid-1990s - 25 years before the cinematic success of 2018’s Black Panther. They include Meteor Man and Marvel Comics characters such as Bishop, Black Ranger, Storm and Blade.

The Miller exhibition is currently on display through December in the Art Center/Gallery, located in DSU’s William C. Jason Library. And it's online for public viewing.

Miller notes this exhibition is part of a fellowship awarded to him by the Delaware Division of the Arts (DDA), the second such fellowship he’s received.

Delaware Public Media' s arts coverage is made possible, in part, by support from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
