DNREC penalizes Kent General and St. Francis for hazardous waste violations

DNREC

Bayhealth’s Kent General Hospital and St. Francis Hospital have been penalized by DNREC over hazardous waste violations.

Last year, DNREC conducted a series of inspections to make sure Delaware hospitals were complying with hazardous waste regulations. An assessment conducted in July 2014 showed that Kent General committed  22 violations and another one conducted in May 2014 showed that St. Francis had 10 violations.

Violations at both hospitals included improper disposal of pharmaceutical waste and failure to conduct weekly inspections of hazardous waste facilities. After these violations were identified, DNREC assisted Bayhealth and St. Francis with conducting employee training on handling hazardous waste. The hospitals have since complied with Delaware’s regulations.

Secretary David Small has ordered Kent General to pay $84,535 in penalty and cost recovery. St. Francis must pay $14,974 total.
