New Castle County further restricts park amenities during coronavirus pandemic

More amenities are being shut down at New Castle County parks because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Because of the lack of social distancing at some parks, the county announced the closing of fenced in dog parks, skate parks and restrooms and the removal of port-o-johns in parks.

County Executive Matt Meyer drove around over the weekend, and he saw people not following the state’s social distancing guidelines prompting the new closings.

The closures also include tennis courts - and Meyer explains that follows guidance from the United States Tennis Association.

"The USTA, US Tennis Association, who are constantly all the time saying play tennis, play tennis, play tennis late last week came out with a statement that said now is not the time to play tennis and you should stop playing tennis. There's some indication that you can pass the virus by playing tennis, so that clinched it for us that you should not be playing tennis at any county parks."

Even with these new guidelines, Meyer is still encouraging people to go to the park.

"Go jog at parks, walk at parks, walk your dog, bike ride, but outside of that you really shouldn't be going to parks to engage in all sorts of physical activity."

The county closed basketball courts and playgrounds at its parks because people were not following social distancing guidelines.
