Delaware State University students are not returning to campus this semester.
DSU president Tony Allen says classes will be held online for the remainder of the spring semester.
"It is important to emphasize that Delaware State University has not closed or ceased operations, said Allen in a letter to the university community Monday. "Instruction and essential functions continue in a manner consistent with the current State of Emergency orders."
In his letter, Allen pledged to provide maximum flexibility to any student experiencing issues with devices or internet connectivity, including extended time to finish their work.
He also says the school will make sure seniors scheduled to graduate get the support need to finish their coursework.
But there will be no on-campus Commencment this May. Instead, the school with offer a virtual graduation on May 15th and another one on campus next fall. Degrees will be mailed sometime in May or June.
No students can return to campus until the State of Emergency in Delaware is lifted – and when that happens a plan for moving out of dorms will be announced. Students currently allowed remain on campus can stay and have access to reduced services.
DSU’s Laboratory School child care program remains open and critical research can continue with mininal footprint.
"Students, employees, alumni, the Board of Trustees, and all other stakeholders have not only complied with the necessary directives, but have employed imagination, initiative, and energy in finding ways to keep our academic and operational continuity going," said Allen in his letter. "We still have a long way to go before the COVID-19 pandemic is over and we can resume normal operations, but I am clear-headed about what it will take to get through this moment."
