New COVID-19 cases bring Delaware total to 56

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Delaware reports 11 new COVID-19 Sunday, taking the state total to 56.

Seven of the new cases are in New Castle County, which now has 39 cases to date.  4 new cases are reported in Sussex County, giving it 12 cases.

Kent County still has 5 confirmed cases to date.

The Division of Public Health says at least six individuals are hospitalized and three are critically ill. That's up from 5 hospitalized and 2 critically ill Saturday.

The ages those with confirmed cases as of Saturday afternoon ranged from 14 to 80 and the cases involved 30 men and 26 women.

DPH also notes that the source of exposure for many of these positive cases is unknown, indicating community spread of the virus is occurring in Delaware.

Gov. John Carney closes Delaware’s beaches yesterday to keep people from congregating there – and says further restrictions on businesses staying opening, and on the movement of people in communities are coming.

The state is poised to open testing sites in Wilmington, Newark, Dover, Millsboro, Frankford and Seaford Monday - operated by various hospitals - to help test people with symptoms of COVID-19 for free.

Patients need a prescription to be tested. Those with a medical provider will need to be evaluated by their provider first, preferably over the phone.
