Second victim confirmed associated with fatal shooting outside Smyrna Middle School

Smyrna School District

State police confirm a second victim associated with Tuesday’s fatal shooting in the parking lot of Smyrna Middle School.

In addition to the 38-year-old woman from Smyrna shot and killed around 10:15 Tuesday morning outside the middle school, police now say a second victim was found in her apartment on the 800 block of McLane Gardens in Smyrna. The 21-year-old female was pronounced dead on the scene with apparent gunshot wounds.

The suspect, a 47-year-old male, fled the scene at the school and was pursued by police into Maryland where they say he shot himself and crashed his vehicle. The suspect was airlifted to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

All students and staff at Smyrna Middle School were quickly accounted for after the incident, and police say there was never any active threat to the public.

Police have yet to identify the suspect or victims, but say it was likely a domestic dispute.

Students at Smyrna Middle School had already been scheduled to attend classes virtually Wednesday.
