First State sees triple digit rise in COVID-19 cases Saturday as rapid test kits arrive

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Public health officials announced 143 more cases of COVID-19 Saturday, bringing the state’s total so far to 593.

No new deaths were reported by the Division of Public Health, leaving the number of total fatalities in Delaware at 14.

But the number of hospitalizations rose to 95 Saturday.  That’s up from 63 Friday.

And DPH says the number of people considered recovered from the virus held steady at 71.

The Div. of Public Health also reports it received delayed shipment of 5,000 rapid test kits Saturday. The order was held for several days in Cincinnati by the Food and Drug Administration.

Once DPH validates kits, they will primarily test health care workers, first responders, and residents at long-term care facilities where outbreaks are suspected. Results can be provided in 5 to 15 minutes.

State officials have confirmed “outbreaks” of cases at three long-term care facilities.  And the Department of Correction reports a two correctional officers at the Vaughn prison have tested postive.  The second postive test came Saturday a day after the first was reported Friday. Both officers are home isolating and recovering.
