Novel coronavirus prompts changes at UD

The University of Delaware is making more moves in response to the threat posed by novel coronavirus disease.There are still no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the First State, butUD officials say the CDC’s current guidance for older adults and those with chronic health conditions is prompting it to suspend all of its Osher Lifelong Learning Institute programming throughout the state until further notice. 

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute exclusively serves people 50 and older.

The university has also cancelled the annual UDance fundraiser for childhood cancer scheduled for March 22nd at UD’s Bob Carpenter Center.  The event raises millions annually for research.

And the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association – which governs high school sports in the First State – says its boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments will not be held at the Carpenter Center. 

 

And the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association, which governs high school sports in the First State, says upcoming boys’ and girls’ basketball tournament games will not be held at UD’s Bob Carpenter Center as scheduled.

DIAA says it made the decision to move its semi-final and state titles games from the Bob after the university told it that spectators would not be allowed in the venue for games.

DIAA rescheduled all semi-final games at available school sites.  Plans for the state championship games have not been finalized.

The boys' state semi-finals will have Dover host Saint Andrew's Thursday night a 6:30 p.m., while Sanford and Appoquinimink face-off at Saint Mark's Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The girls' state semi-finals will also be Thursday night. Saint Elizabeth visits Conrad at 6:30 p.m. and Sanford travels to Cape Henlopen for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
