Major at Delaware women's prison arrested after alleged sexual relations with inmate

State police have arrested a ranking official at the state's only women's prison amid allegations he had sex with a female inmate at least twice.

Fred Way III is the security superintendent at Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in New Castle. Department of Corrections spokesman Jason Miller says Way is a major, and third in command at the facility.

Miller says a 27-year-old female inmate reported in June that she'd had sexual relations with Way. Way was then placed on administrative leave as State Police opened a criminal investigation, according to Miller. An internal investigation is also ongoing.

Way is now facing charges of sexual relations in a detention facility and official misconduct. He was arraigned Tuesday afternoon and released on $5,000 bond. He remains on leave from his post.

Miller says it's "exceedingly rare" for correctional managers to be implicated in cases like these, and "uncommon" for Delaware correctional officers in general. He says another officer was arrested in a similar case in 2012.
