Catholic Diocese of Wilmington
The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington concludes a year long celebration of its 150th anniversary early next month.

The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington takes a look back as it marks a major milestone anniversary.

Celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Wilmington Diocese’s founding concludes with a Diocesan Archives special exhibit.

Communications Director Bob Krebs says the Diocese’s sesquicentennial year began on March 3, 2018 and concludes in just a few weeks on Sunday, March, 2019.

The diocese was created by Pope Pius IX on March 3, 1868, carved out of two others.

“It took a portion of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and a portion of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and made the Diocese of Wilmington,” Krebs said.

Krebs says the exhibit will at the Family Center of Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Church in Greenville on Sunday, February 24, 2019 from noon until 3 p.m.

“Where many artifacts will be on display, including the actual document that was signed by Pope Pius X to actually make our Diocese a Diocese,” said Krebs.

Krebs notes the exhibit will also include the “Sayer Chalice,” used at Saint Joseph Church in Cordova, Maryland back in 1640, along with various bishops rings, miters and pectoral crosses.
