Dover's Brengle scores Wimbledon upset

Dover’s Madison Brengle scored a significant upset on one of the biggest stages in tennis.

The 27-year-old Brengle knocked off Petra Kvitova in three sets - 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 – in the second round at Wimbledon, the year's thord Grand Slam event.

Kvitova is a two-time Wimbledon champ, but was playing in just her third tournament since suffering severe stab wounds to her left hand while trying to fend off a knife-wielding home intruder last December.  Kvitova struggled in Wednesday’s final set – feeling so sick and fatigued that a trainer came out at one point to check her blood pressure.

It’s the second major upset victory this year for Brengle – who’s ranked 95nd in the world. She stunned then world number two Serena Williams at an Australian Open tune-up tourney in New Zealand back in January.

And interestingly – Brengle is now 3-1 lifetime against Kvitova – including a 2015 win when Kvitov was ranked 4th in the world.

Brengle is now on to the Wimbledon’s third round and a date with Caroline Garcia of France.
