Delmarva Power giving free trees away to help customers save energy

The Bald Cypress tree is just one of several types of trees being given to Delmarva Power customers to help them save energy.

Spring has sprung and Arbor Day is right around the corner. And Delmarva Power is taking the opportunity to help the environment.

Delmarva Power is giving away free trees to improve air quality and help customers reduce household energy usage.

“For the 8th year, Delmarva Power is stepping up to support the Arbor Day Foundation’s Energy-Saving Trees program. And how we’re doing that is, we’re giving away 1,000 free trees to our residential customers,” said Delmarva Power spokesman Tim Stokes.

He says customers were allowed to reserve one free tree per household - and this year’s supply of trees is gone.

Stokes calls the program extremely effective.

"You know since 2012, Delmarva Power customers have planted more than 9,400 trees. And it has saved them nearly 20-million kilowatt hours and removed close to 150,000 pounds of air pollutants from the atmosphere,” said Stokes.

Stokes notes a variety of trees in varying sizes were offered, including Bald Cypress, River Birch and White Dogwood.

One gallon trees will be delivered between now and May. Three and five gallon trees must be picked up at Delmarva Power events this month and in May.
