The Warehouse teams up with Delmarva Power on Ag Pod, other initiatives

The Warehouse

The Warehouse - a Wilmington-based community space billed as “For Teens, By Teens” - is teaming up with Delmarva Power.

The Warehouse and Delmarva Power plan to work together on several new initiatives, according to Melody Phillips, director of operations at The Warehouse.

“So we actually have three projects with them. And the very first project was the Ag Pod that was just recently delivered about two weeks ago," said Phillips. "The Warehouse will also receive solar panels on our roof, which is another collaboration with Delmarva (Power).”

Phillips says the third initiative is an electric bus with vehicle-to-grid technology,  It will be delivered to The Warehouse next year.

Phillips explains how the Ag Pod will work at The Warehouse.

“The Agricultural Pod is a shipping container. And it will produce about an acre to an acre-and-a-half worth of produce; and it’s all around hydroponics and vertical farming," said Phillips. "So our teens will have the ability to learn about hydroponics and agricultural farming and grow produce inside the Ag Pod.”

She notes the first batch of produce is expected to be available in February or March just as the farmers’ market season starts.

Phillips says the plan is for teens to start a farmers’ market that gives residents of Riverside and other nearby communities access to fresh produce.

Phillips points out Riverside is considered a “food desert,” a place where it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.
