DSU Class of 2020 celebrates with high-profile virtual commencement

Delaware State University’s Class of 2020 couldn’t receive their degrees in-person due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, that didn’t stop the largest graduating class in school history from celebrating in a big way during a virtual commencement Saturday.

Former Vice President and presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden was among the high profile “guests” who recorded video messages to the nearly 700 graduates.  He called on the outgoing class to help the country rebound from the current crisis.

“I’m looking forward to all of you becoming leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and artists,” Biden said.  “Here in Delaware, many of you will be responsible for developing new technologies and new ways of engagement as a result of the education, support, and guidance you received over the last four years.”

Biden last spoke at a DSU commencement in 2016 when he delivered the keynote speech.

Dover native and CBS3 Philadelphia news anchor Ukee Washington was the keynote speaker.  He encouraged the graduates to enjoy their future careers.

“It’s not about the pursuit of happiness.  It’s about the happiness in the pursuit and sharing this brief time with you on this special occasion has made this honorary Hornet extremely happy,” Washington said.  “And, we will get through this.  And when we do, it’s up to all of you to make great things happen as you are all set to change to the world.”

Washington’s father, the late Dr. Ulysses Washington, was the longtime chair of DSU's Department of Agriculture and taught and lived on campus for 50 years.

Former DSU president Harry Williams, singer Erykah Badu, actress Vanessa Williams, rapper Method Man, and former Miss Delaware USA and DSU alum Mia Jones also sent encouraging words to the new grads Saturday during the nearly 2-and-a-half-hour event.

The traditional commencement was canceled in March as classes moved online and the campus shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
