Drive-in concerts coming to Frawley Stadium

Jun 18, 2020

As Phase II of Delaware’s reopening offers more opportunities for people to find entertainment options outside of their homes, The Grand Opera House and the Riverfront Development Corporation (RDC) are partnering to offer a drive-in concert series in Wilmington.

The series is slated to start next month in the parking lot of Frawley Stadium.

The Grand’s executive director Mark Fields says the coronavirus pandemic shutdown forced them to cancel more than 50 performances since mid-March.

And he calls this outdoor “Concerts by Car” series a little light at the end of the tunnel.

“Our first concert is going to be Friday, July 3 and it’ll be one of the resident companies of The Grand Opera House - the Rock Orchestra, which is a local rock band that performs classic rock music very faithfully to the original recordings. And they’re going to do a Greatest Hits of the Beatles concert.”

Fields says concert goers have a couple of options.

They can either stay in theeir vehicles and listen to the show over FM radio. Or they can get out and sit in lawn chairs next to their vehicle, since cars will be spaced out to maintain social distancing.

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki suuports the concept.

"I applaud the efforts of our friends at The Grand, who have found an innovative and groundbreaking way to let us appreciate live music outdoors again," said Purzycki in a statement. "This is just one more example of the many positive, creative initiatives that are now cropping up all over Wilmington in response to our new environment.”

Tickets are available starting Friday at The Grand's website. They are $25 per person per car, plus fees.

The Grand and the RDC will be announcing more concerts if the July 3, 2020 event is successful.
