Developmental Disabilities Council host virtual LIFE Conference

The annual Liberty and Independence for Everyone (LIFE) Conference - hosted by Delaware’s Developmental Disabilities Council starts this week.";

Delaware’s Developmental Disabilities Council(DDC) is gearing up for its 23rd annual LIFE Conference this week and next.

The Council consists of individuals with disabilities, their family members and community partners. Its role is to advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This year’s Liberty and Independence for Everyone (LIFE) Conference is a fully virtual event Wednesday, September 15, 2021 and then again on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 21 and 22, 2021.

Developmental Disabilities Council community relations officer Emmanuel Jenkins says they realized the COVD-19 pandemic would likely prohibit many from attending in-person.

So he says the LIFE Conference Planning Committee embraced the opportunities and benefits that a virtual format would offer.

“The focus of the conference is independence through assistive technology, education, family  and legislation. And the primary target for the conference is - again - family members of those with disabilities, individuals with disabilities and even people looking to go into the disability field,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins notes that the coronavirus pandemic has contributed to trauma experienced by many individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.  He says there will be a breakout session designed to help family members and caregivers address this trauma.

Information on topics and presenters and panelists can be found here.

Registration is closed, but Jenkins says anyone still interested can email him at info@ LIFE Conference DE.org and he’ll try to get them signed up.
