Delaware reaches a major COVID vaccination milestone.
The CDC says 70.1% of residents over 18 have received at least one vaccine dose.
That gets Delaware to President Biden’s 70% by July 4th goal.
Gov. John Carney calls the news a “big deal.”
"It’s why we’re beating this virus and moving past this pandemic after a long 16 months," said Carney in a statement. "And it’s why we can celebrate Independence Day safely, surrounded by family and friends."
Delaware joins neighboring Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania in topping the 70% by July 4 goal, though the nation as a while will likely fall short.
The First State’s vaccination rate has slowed in recent weeks and officials said Tuesday Delaware was about 1,500 doses away from the 70% mark.
Carney and Div. of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay continue to encourage unvaccinated Delawareans – especially between 18-34 - to get a shot. That group has been the most reluctant to get vaccinated.
"Even as we celebrate this significant moment in time, we are continuing our efforts to get more Delawareans vaccinated. We especially want to encourage 18–34-year-olds who are most likely to be out and socializing with others to get the vaccine as soon as possible," said Rattay in a statement.
State officials earlier said pharmacies are handling about 70 percent of the shots statewide at this point, but state and local governments will continue holding community events, despite low turnout, to reach as many people as possible.
