Democrat Kathy McGuiness will be Delaware’s next State Auditor.
McGuiness defeated Republican James Spadola with almost 58% of the vote to become the State’s first female Auditor.
McGuiness got her start as a small business owner before spending 17 years as Rehoboth city commissioner.
She is also the first Democrat elected to the office in 28 years, replacing Republican Tom Wagner, who retired for health reasons.
McGuiness says he wants to start working immediately so she can hit the ground running in January.
She says, “I’d like to start before then, get in the office, talk to some folks, evaluate who’s there, what positions are empty, what needs to be filled, what kind of model or structure should we model ourselves after, you know, looking at other auditor’s offices across the nation, and figure out plan A, B, and C, and be ready by January.”
McGuiness will replace Republican Tom Wagner - who is retiring for health reasons after holding the post for 28 years.
However, she claims the position is not a partisan one.
McGuiness says, “When you get in that office, you are independent. You’re looking at items, numbers, things that are presented in front of you. It’s not a political office, nor should it be.”
McGuiness is one of four women elected to statewide office this midterm cycle.
