Manlove reappointed over GOP objections

Delaware Public Media

Republicans in both the House and Senate are rejecting the reappointment of Elections Commissioner Elaine Manlove, saying they have no confidence in her abilities.

24 GOP lawmakers from both chambers sent a letter to Gov. Jack Markell (D) Tuesday, asking him to wait for the next governor to fill the position.

During a committee hearing considering Manlove’s appointment, Senate Minority Leader Gary Simpson (R-Milford) says her implementation of a new campaign finance reporting system remains bungled.

“You sort of sound like you’ve got it whipped, but I hear complaints – especially from first timers – how difficult the system is to learn and I think even your employees find it difficult in many instances.”

Republicans says the decision came after six weeks of talks with Senate Democrats and Markell aides.

Markell responded in a letter saying he wouldn’t withdraw Manlove’s nomination, touting her experience and work to improve voter access and transparency.

Democratic senators eventually confirmed her.
