Senator Carper meets with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland

Delaware Public Media

Delaware Senator Tom Carper met with US Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland Wednesday.

Afterwards, in a statement, Carper said he was impressed with Garland’s "humility" and "respect for the law."

Garland meets all his criteria for a Supreme Court judge, including good judgment, good judicial temperament, and an ability to build judicial consensus, the statement said.

Carper also chastised Republican senators for refusing to meet with Garland. He says it’s unfortunate that the nomination has been reduced to nothing more than a “political spectacle,” and the American people deserve better.

President Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in March to replace the late Antonin Scalia.

Garland is currently chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
