Delaware families encouraged to Love the Bus

Delaware Public Media

Educators are joining students and their families in celebrating bus drivers and bus aides as part of 11th annual national Love the Bus program this month.

More than 121,000 First State students ride the bus to school every day.

Gov. John Carney (D-Delaware) issued a proclamation Tuesday, recognizing the work school bus drivers and aides do to get them there safely.

And Tuesday morning State Education Secretary Susan Bunting and Capital School District superintendent Dan Shelton thanked drivers dropping off students at William Henry Middle School in Dover in person.

The Love the Bus program was founded by the American School Bus Council in 2007.

In addition to recognizing drivers and aides, it also gives families and children a chance to learn more about the school bus safety and the environmental benefits of riding the bus.

The American School Bus Council reports that students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely if they take the school bus rather than traveling by car.
