Delaware’s COVID-19 death toll rises to 112 Saturday with state health officials reporting 12 new fatalities connected to the virus.
The state also announced 135 new confirmed cases, one more than a day ago. That brings the total lab-confirmed cases in the state so far to 3,577.
Case numbers continue to rise more quickly in Sussex County, It added 96 new confirmed cases Saturday while New Castle County saw 18. Sussex now trails New Castle by just 14 cases even though New Castle County’s population is more than double that of Sussex.
The latest victims announced include seven New Castle County residents, three Kent County residents, and two Sussex County residents.
Ten were residents of long-term care facilities – bringing the number of deaths connected to those facilities to 71. The Div. of Public Health notes that number also now includes two previously reported deaths that were found to be long-term care facility residents.
The current hospitalizations in Delaware rose by 23 from the 277 announced Thursday to 300 Saturday. 61 people are critically ill.
The number of people considered recovered has now reached 809.
Gov. John Carney announced yesterday that Delaware schools will remain closed and rely on remote learning for the remainder of this school year.
Delaware joins 42 other states and Washington D.C. in closing their schools for the remainder of this school year.
