Silver Lake Park in Dover reopens

Delaware Public Media

Dover residents can start using Silver Lake Park again.

The city reopened the park Thursday.  It was closed for weeks after a broken sewer main spilled wastewater there on Dec. 19.

Kent County officials say the leak started shortly after the completion of a project adding slip lining to just under three miles of sewer pipe running along Route 13.

The officials say affected areas were treated with lime and the county has been tracking bacteria levels in the soil and area waterways.

Waterway samples were found to be within an acceptable range, and soil samples continue to be monitored, according to a post on the city’s Facebook page.

The post says some areas of the park may be fenced off while the county inspects the damaged sewer main.

A spokesperson for the City of Dover said the park had been closed as a public safety precaution and affected areas were roped off with caution tape during the closure.
