Local Toys for Tots Campaigns are gearing up to help needy children from now until Christmas.
For the second year in a row, Allen Harim is hosting Toys for Tots in Sussex County, providing space for volunteers to collect, sort and give out toys for needy children.
"Actually I’ve been with the program going on 18 years. I started off by just collecting toys at different locations and bringing them back to a warehouse and at that point that’s where they would distribute them,” Ted Bennicoff is the coordinator of the Sussex County chapter of the Toys for Tots campaign.
Bennicoff is a Marine Corps veteran who was wounded three times in Vietnam and says his first group worked out of a 12-by-12-foot shed.
Last year, Allen Harim stepped in to help alleviate the space issue. Allen Harim spokeswoman Cathy Bassett says they offered use of an empty warehouse at the former Vlasic pickle plant on Pinnacle Way in Millsboro
"We couldn’t be more pleased to be a part of it and help them. They’re an amazing group that do some fabulous things for families in Sussex County every Christmas,” said Bassett.
