Third Wilmington firefighter dies from Sept. arson fire

Wilmington Fire Dept.

A Wilmington firefighter who was injured battling a blaze in late September died from her injuries Thursday night.

Ardythe Hope was the third Wilmington firefighter to die from the September 24th blaze at a Canby Park row home.

Wilmington Fire Chief Anthony Goode tweeted this announcement Thursday night:

"It is with the heaviest heart that I announce the Line of Duty Death of Senior Firefighter Ardy Hope. #RIP Ardy, I/We love you."

Captain Christopher Leach and Lt. Jerry Fickes died at the scene after being trapped in the basement of the Canby Park home when the first floor collapsed.

A fourth fire firefighter, Brad Speakman, was hospitalized but released last month.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal has charged a 27-year-old tenant of the home for setting the blaze.

Among other charges, Beatriz Fana-Ruiz is facing two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Fickes and Leach. It’s likely she’ll be charged now for the death of Hope as well.
