First State roads were busy over holiday weekend

Delaware Public Media

Delaware’s major highways saw a bump in volume over the Memorial Day weekend compared to previous years.

DelDOT reports nearly 978,772 vehicles passed through the state’s three major toll plazas – the Newark plaza on I-95 and the Route 1 tolls at Biddle’s Corner and Dover – between Friday and Monday.

It’s the third straight year the volume has increased.  Last year, DelDOT reported about 874,ooo made their way through First State tolls over Memorial Day – and three years ago that number was just under 795,000.

If you include Thursday’s traffic count, DelDOT says over 1.2 million vehicles went through Delaware’s toll plazas during the holiday, with the state collecting an estimated 3.2 million dollars in tolls.

Last year, DelDOT reported collecting 2.6 million dollars in tolls during the four-day period between Friday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend.
