Holiday traffic numbers up in First State over Memorial Day weekend

Delaware Public Media

Wonderful weather over the Memorial Day weekend meant more people traveling through and around the First State during the holiday.

DelDOT reports over 874 thousand cars passed through the state’s three major toll plazas – the Newark plaza on I-95 and the Route 1 tolls at Biddle’s Corner and Dover – between Friday and Monday.

That’s a slight increase from 845 thousand a year ago, but a significant bump from two years ago when just under 795 thousand vehicles rolled through state toll plazas

DelDOT estimates it collected over two-point-six millions dollars in tolls during the four-day weekend.  That’s up from one-point-nine million dollars last year.

Volume is expected to be heavy again this weekend with NASCAR in Dover for the first of its two annual race weekends.
