Howard Young prison seeks return to normal after flu outbreak

Delaware Public Media

The number of flu cases at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution are still climbing, but officials say that they will gradually transition the prison back to normal operations.

The Department of Corrections has confirmed 41 cases of the flu, up from 28 a week ago. Three offenders are currently housed in the prison’s infirmary for monitoring and treatment.

The outbreak at Howard R. Young began about two weeks ago. In an effort to take precautions, visits, volunteer shifts and programs at Howard R. Young were canceled during that time.

Now, officials say efforts will begin to “incrementally re-implement” visitation and other programs at the prison.

DOC staff and offenders will continue to be screened at Howard Young . And the department is expanding education efforts to emphasize the importance of flu vaccination to all facilities.

Flu cases statewide are also rising late in the season, with 92 confirmed cases at the end of February, and that doesn’t include cases at Howard R. Young.
