Dover Police Dept investigates officer-involved shooting

The Dover Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened yesterday afternoon.

Officers responded to a tip about a suspect with a handgun in the area of the 100 block of South New Street. When officers arrived, they observed a suspect who was later identified as Terrance Fletcher, 21. As they approached Fletcher, he fled through towards Governors Avenue, where other officers were waiting to assist. A Dover police officer fired his weapon and struck Fletcher in the upper thigh.

Fletcher was treated at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, where he is in stable condition. He has been charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited. He is also being held on $20,000 cash bond.

The officer who shot Fletcher is a three-year veteran of the Dover Police Department and a member of the Street Crimes Unit. He has been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Following the incident, a large crowd formed on South New Street. Members of the crowd were hostile to police officers coming from Smyrna, Milford and Capitol. State police came to assist and two subjects were arrested for disorderly conduct and other charges.
