Delaware unemployment keeps steady in July

Delaware Public Media

After two months of slight increases, Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained flat at 4.7 percent for July.

Since May, the average number of people without a job in the First State has increased by about 420 each month, but that number is still down overall for 2015.

22,000 people were unemployed last month according to state Labor Department figures, with 441,000 Delawareans earning a paycheck.

The state’s jobless figures have dropped dramatically from this time last year when it stood at 5.8 percent.

Delaware’s labor market trend has mirrored the nation’s over the past two months – the U.S. unemployment rate continues to hover at 5.3 percent.

Over the past month, government and the construction industry have hired the most people, while the professional and business services and hospitality sectors show the strongest growth since this time last year.

Non-seasonally adjusted figures were down for every Delaware city and county.

Wilmington's unemployment rate dipped two-tenths of a point to 7.4 percent, Newark sharply dropped nearly a full point to end at 5.0 percent and Sussex County finished at 4.0 percent for July.
