AAA predicts most July 4 travelers in mid-Atlantic since 2007

Delaware Public Media

AAA mid-Atlantic is predicting the biggest July 4 travel weekend since 2007.

More than 112,000 Delawareans will travel more than 50 miles for Independence Day between July 1 and 5. That's up 9 percent from regional travel this past Memorial Day -- which had the highest projected volume for that holiday in 10 years.

This year would mark the most people traveling in the mid-Atlantic for July 4 since the beginning of the recession. Triple-A spokesman Jim Lardear says travel has been ticking back up since then -- which is good news for coastal attractions in Delaware.

"You know, it's been years since we heard that term 'staycation' and people wanting to stay closer to home," he says. "I think a lot of the economic indicators are starting to turn more favorable for families, and that's why we're starting to see travel really pick back up."

In preparation for the holiday, which is the biggest of the summer travel-wise, Lardear says motorists should make sure their cars are in working order.

Triple-A rescued 1,200 people in need of roadside assistance in Delaware last July 4, out of 27,000 across the mid-Atlantic.
