Investigation of weekend shooting at DSU continues

Delaware Public Media

Delaware State University police continue to investigate weekend shootings on and near campus that sent three people to the hospital.

DSU spokesperson Carlos Holmes said Tuesday that “we expect arrests at some point but we haven’t gotten there yet.”

Three men were shot on campus shortly after 8 pm Saturday during an annual University-sanctioned student Greek cookout.  Another shooting occurred early Sunday morning at University Courtyard, the school’s student-housing complex just off campus.   There were no injuries in the second incident.

Holmes said the three victims – who are not DSU students- remain hospitalized in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Holmes adds that school officials are holding “earnest discussions” on what happened and how to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, but feel proper security was in place last weekend.

"There was ample security on site during that event.  It wasn’t that we were caught by surprise by the number of people that were there.  We knew this ahead of time.  We’ve had this event before.  It’s an annual event," said Holmes.  "It just takes one person.  [It] just takes one person to disrupt [things] and that’s basically what happened.

Holmes also says that while it was non-students that were shot, the school is committed to keeping the school and these events open to visitors.

"We are certainly going to look at these type of events and see what we can do in the future to keep these things form happening to the best of our ability, but we’re proud of our university and we’re going to expect to have visitors on our campus from time to time," said Holmes.
