Delaware Super Cup

A soccer tournament with an international flair returns to the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica this weekend.

The Delaware Super Cup takes place Saturday and Sunday with the action getting underway early on Saturday.

There will be games all weekend wrapping up on Sunday night.

"Over 200 teams are coming from all over from the Eastern shore from other states, from other countries, and this is the fifth annual Delaware Super Cup and the second year being in the Delaware Turf Sports Complex in Frederica," said Edy Morales, events coordinator for the Delaware Super Cup.

Among the countries represented in some way are Canada, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and England.

There is $300,000 in prizes to be split among top-performing teams, and the tournament includes family-friendly fan zones, live entertainment and local food vendors.

With over 12,000 people expected to converge on Frederica over the course of the weekend, Morales says it will be a financial boon for the area.

"It impacts Delaware, mainly Kent County, because there's people coming in from other states, other countries,” said Morales. “The economic impact is also good because people flying in, people eating at local restaurants."

Last year’s tournament featured winning teams from Delaware, Maryland, Alabama and New York.
