Delaware State Forests now on Avenza Maps

Delaware’s 21,000 acres of State Forests are now on an app that can help guide you through those woods.";

There’s a new app out that will help guide you through Delaware’s state forests.

Delaware’s  21,000 acres of State Forests are now on Avenza Maps.

“This was something that our Forest Health Specialist Bill Seybold had noticed that other public agencies and federal partners were using," said John Petersen - the community relations officer with the Delaware Forest Service. "It’s a really useful app.”

Petersen says, "It basically utilizes a geo-referenced PDF map, that when it’s loaded into the mobile app - so Avena Maps is a mobile app that you would put on your smartphone. And it’s available for both iPhone and Android phones. But when you download this app, you can actually select one of the maps from our State Forests collection.”

Petersen says when you pick a location, you see a blue dot on your phone wherever you go - so you will always know where you are.

He says users can zoom in and out and mark points of interest - like where their car is parked or where their hunting stand is located.

Petersen adds that the app and map also work when your cellphone is out of range of an internet connection.

And he notes that some people have already told him that the app is useful when walking or biking so they don’t get lost.

There is no cost to download the map on Android or iPhones.
