The executive director of the Lewes Historical Society (LHS) is departing after 17 years there.

The Lewes Historical Society (LHS) needs to find a new executive director.

Mike DiPaolo recently resigned as executive director at the Lewes Historical Society  after 17 years.

“I felt that the Society was in a very wonderful position with the opening of the Lewes History Museum and the Children’s Discovery Center and has a strong endowment and has a lot of broad-based community support,” DiPaolo said.

DiPaolo is moving to a new job as vice president for southern Delaware at the Delaware Community Foundation (DCF) - working out of the agency's Georgetown Office.

He says he’s extremely excited to learn about the people who are passionate about southern Delaware - just as he is, “And things that matter to them...the causes that matter to them. And looking for ways to help them leverage their philanthropic giving and to make sure that we can improve life here in southern Delaware and across the board.”

DiPaolo says he officially starts his new job at the Delaware Community Foundation at the end of April.

DiPaolo sayshe’s proud of what the Historical Society accomplished during his tenure there, "I’d have to say...of course the 375th Anniversary we had back in 2006 was a magnificent year and really helped launch the Society on the trajectory that it’s on now. Of course the Children’s Discovery Center and the opening of the Lewes History Museum has been a long-held vision by the Society.”

DiPaolo says he was also personally very proud to be named by the American Alliance of Museums as the Nancy Hanks Award winner for Professional Excellence in 2011.

The Lewes Historical Society will begin its search for new next executive director in the coming weeks.
