Two new exhibits opening at the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation

Delaware Public Media

The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation will launch two new exhibits at its Copeland Maritime Center in Wilmington next month.

One of the new exhibits, “Science of Sailing,” uses the First State’s tall ship to put a historical spin on STEM education.

“One highlights the science behind sailing, which kind of goes into the different STEM programs that we highlight in our education programming for children of various ages... all thru school ages. It goes through celestial navigation, sail-power, ship-stability, harnessing the wind….things like that," said Joe Valenti, marketing manager for The Riverfront Development Corporation and the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation.

Valenti says the other exhibit, “Kalmar, Sweden - Key to the Kingdom,” delves into the city that lends the Kalmar Nyckel its name -  Kalmar, Sweden. Kalmar is Wilmington’s Sister City in Sweden and the exhibit examines its past and present.

Both exhibits open on Thursday, May 10th, with a ribbon cutting and reception from 5 until 7 p-m. The public is welcome to that event - but registration is required.  You can do so here.
