Your guide to Firefly traffic this weekend

More than 70,000 people will begin pouring into Dover Thursday for this year’s Firefly Music Festival.

Traffic around the Dover International Speedway is expected to peak Thursday, as the majority of campers arrive for the four-day music festival, according to DelDOT’s Gene Donaldson.

“If you plan your trip around US 13 in that area, it gets congested as we load vehicles into Lot 1 for check-in,” he said.

Donaldson also expects traffic on Route 1 to get congested over the weekend as day visitors to the festival mix with beach goers.

DelDOT will be directing festival traffic to exit Route 1 north of Dover at Scarborough Road.

You can expect some congestion on the Dupont Highway between there and the Lot 1 camping entrance atLeipsicRd this Thursday and Friday.

If you’re coming from the South, Donaldson recommends entering the camping lot through Jeffric Blvd.

“That’s kind of a secret entrance that nobody knows about. And it's a lot less crowded,” he said.

Depending on traffic backups on Route 1, DelDOT may send festival goers to the next exit south of Dover. But Donaldson doesn't expect that to happen this weekend.

Dover International Speedway seats 85,000 people and draws upwards of 100,000 visitors on a NASCAR weekend.

"70,000 for Firefly is manageable," Donaldson said.

There may also be some traffic around the daily parking lots at Dover Downs through the weekend.

Delaware Technical Community College in North Dover will serve as the will call pass headquarters and may also see its fair share of traffic.

Leipsic Road and Persimmon Tree Road will be closed around Dover International Speedway from noon Thursday through Sunday night.

Donaldson recommends downloading the DelDOT traffic app to find the least congested routes this weekend.
