Wesley College wins at home to advance in NCAA playoffs

Wesley College continued its run of success in the first round of the NCAA Division III football tournament.

The Wolverines out-gunned Framingham State 42-22 at Miller Field in Dover to notch an opening round playoff victory for an 11th straight year.

Wesley scored on 6 yard TD pass from senior quarterback Joe Callahan to Bryce Shade with 23 seconds left in the first half to take a slim 21-14 lead into halftime.  The Wolverines extended the lead to 14 on the second play from scrimmage in the third quarter - a 69 yard scoring strike from Callahan to Alex Kemp. 

Callahan ended up with 411 yards passing and four touchdowns to lead Wesley to the win. Kemp had six catches for 143 yard and three scores.

The Wolverines, now 10-1 this season, will face undefeated Johns Hopkins in the second round next Saturday.

Johns Hopkins improved to 11-0 by blasting Western New England 52-20 in its first round contest in Baltimore.

Also Saturday,  Delaware State avoided a winless season, topping Howard 32-31 at home.  It’s first year coach Kenny Carter’s first victory as DSU coach and left the Hornets with a 1-10 record.

And the University of Delaware ended its 2015 season on a winning note.  The Blue Hens defeated Elon 14-10.  UD finishes the season at 4-7.
