Historic Lewes Farmers' Market hands out scholarships for 2020

via Historic Lewes Farmers Market website

Small-scale farmers across Delmarva can receive scholarships from the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market to help attend sustainable farming conferences.

The Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market has handed out the scholarships for the past 13 years.

And this year it is giving out five, $400 scholarships.

“Two of them went to - they were regular scholarships - they went to Zachary Dittmar of Dittmar Family Farms in Felton, Delaware and Henry Bennett of Bennett Orchards in Frankford, Delaware,” said Helaine Harris, president of the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market  board.

She says Dittmar is using its scholarship to attend the Future Harvest CASA (Chesapeake Alliance for Sustained Agriculture) Conference in College Park, Maryland, while Bennett’s scholarship will help that farm attend the Southeast Regional Fruit and Vegetable Conference in Savannah, Georgia.

Harris says the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market also awarded three emerging women farmers’ scholarships - in memory of Delaware farmer Debra Schaefer.

“She loved farming and was working hard to build her farm," said Harris. "And we wanted to honor her, so we started the Debra Schaefer Scholarship for emerging women farmers.”

Those scholarships went to three Maryland farmers, according to Harris.
