Delaware Electric Cooperative, Constellation Energy complete expansion of Georgetown solar farm

Delaware Electric Cooperative
The Delaware Electric Cooperative and Constellation Energy have completed work to nearly double the size of the Co-Op’s solar farm in Georgetown.";

Work to dramatically expand the size of a Sussex County solar farm is complete.

The Delaware Electric Cooperative signed an agreement with retail energy provider Constellation last year to do the work.

“Back in 2012 and ‘13 we built the Bruce A. Henry Solar Farm. But we only used half of the facility because of the cost of solar at that point in time. Constellation Energy came to us last year and they wanted to build out solar farm and they actually asked to buy it from us and we said no but we’d be glad to let you build it,” said Co-Op president and CEO Bill Andrew.

He says more than 10,000 solar panels were installed at the solar farm over the past several months, adding to the 16,000 panels already there. The panels now provide enough energy to power more than 1,000 Cooperative homes.

Andrew says the Co-Op has a deal to purchase energy produced at the solar farm at stable, competitive price over the next 25 years.

He also notes that while the facility at the Georgetown site is now maxed out, the utility has additional options for adding more solar.

“Right now we have two more properties that are under contract that we hope to finalize and maybe get it started building this year,” said Andrew.

Andrew would not elaborate on those upcoming projects, but says the Delaware Electric Cooperative expects to continue to expand its portfolio of renewable energy.
