DHSS says some Delawareans have through end of April to enroll in health insurance

Delawareans who missed the deadline to sign up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act Marketplace may still have a chance to avoid a penalty.

The state Department of Health and Social Services says residents who missed the February deadline to avoid a penalty have from March 15 to April 30 to sign up for health coverage. The extension is only available to Delawareans who did not have insurance in 2014, owe a penalty and only became aware of or understood the penalty after the initial February 15 deadline.

DHSS says individuals who take advantage of the extension still may have to pay a fine for the months they were uninsured.

The penalty for not having health insurance under the ACA jumped this year from $95 to $325 per adult, or 2 percent of household income, whichever is greater.
